Replacing a ballcock and a flapper in a toilet is a quick and simple do-it-yourself job. You’ll know that your toilet’s flapper needs replacing if you continually see water running into your toilet bowl. The ballcock, also called the fill-valve, will need replacing if there is a leak coming from the bottom of your toilet tank, or the tank, itself, isn’t filling with water. Most local home improvement stores will carry both of these pieces, and you can purchase a universal replacement piece for both. Close the water shut-off valve leading to the toilet. Flush the toilet, so the water in the tank empties. Lift off the toilet tank lid. Unhook the chain running from the handle to the flapper. Unclip the flapper from the two hooks on either side of the flush valve. Cut your replacement flapper into the shape of your old flapper–use the old flap as a template.
