The thermostat will open up when the engine temperature starts to get to hot, and close once the engine is cooled. The pressure that builds up also helps control the cabin heater. Without a thermostat, your Mustang will be prone to overheating and, of course, the heater and defrost functions will not work. Open the hood to expose the engine compartment. Follow the top radiator hose to locate the thermostat housing. Remove the radiator hose at the engine end. Unscrew the hose clamp with a flathead screwdriver. Pull the hose off. Unbolt the top of the thermostat housing with a socket wrench. Pull the top off the housing when the bolts are removed. (You may need to pry it with the flathead screwdriver.)
