When you sit inside your 1999 Ford Escort, insert your key into the ignition switch and turn it, the ignition switch completes an electrical signal that goes from the battery to the starter. When the starter, which is essentially a small electric motor, is powered by the electricity from the completed circuit it turns a gear which turns the internal parts of the engine, allowing it to start. When your ignition switch is no longer working it is necessary to replace it in order to turn your car on. Open the hood and disconnect the negative (black) cable from the Escort’s battery.
