The fuel filter on a fuel-injected LTD keeps dirt, rust and other particles in the fuel system from damaging lines, injectors and other fuel system components. These contaminants eventually jam the filter element, decreasing fuel flow and power to the engine. You can easily replace the filter and restore power to the engine at home. Park your car in a level surface and away from appliances with open flames. Disconnect the ground (black) battery cable using a wrench. Install a fuel pressure gauge to the Schrader valve on the fuel rail. Open the gauge valve to drain the fuel in the line into a proper container to relieve the fuel pressure in the system. Raise the rear passenger side wheel/tire assembly off the ground using a floor jack, and support it with a jack stand under the frame. Apply the parking brakes. Chock the front wheels.
