How Do You Replace 50 Amp Receptacle Wire?

You may need to replace wiring to a 50-ampere receptacle if you are installing a new receptacle for a stand-alone electric range or a built-in electric cook top and wall oven. This is a relatively straightforward task, but keep in mind that you now have to install a cable containing three insulated wires–red, black and white–and a bare ground wire. You also have to install a 3-pole, 4-wire receptacle; 3-pole, 3-wire receptacles are no longer acceptable for new wiring. Beginning with the 1999 Revision of the National Electrical Code (NEC), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Publication 70, the circuit neutral can no longer double as a major appliance grounding conductor. Turn off the circuit breaker protecting the 50-ampere, 240-volt branch circuit at the main breaker panel. Lock the panel closed or secure the breaker in the “off” position so someone doesn’t accidentally turn it back on while you are working on the circuit. Remove the cover from the old 50-ampere receptacle.
