How Do You Repair Wood Floors Before Refinishing?
Prepping a wood floor before refinishing sounds like a complicated and tiresome venture. But measured against the high cost of a professional carpenter and the satisfaction of using basic woodworking skills, the reward is great. If the floor is only damaged in a handful of places, you can replace the damaged boards and get on to sanding and refinishing your wooden floors. You will want to replace sections that have flaws that are not repairable such as warping, splintering, splits, cupping or gouges. Step 1 Assess a floor board that needs repair, and buy the replacement board needed. Step 2 Drill several large holes over the damaged section using a spade bit. Be careful not to go through the sub floor. Step 3 Use a wide butt chisel to split the damaged section down the middle. Use a pry bar to remove the damaged section. Square any ragged edges of the opening. Step 4 Measure the hole and cut the replacement to those exact measurements. Test that the newly cut board will fit perfectly.
