How Do You Repair The Canvas On A Catamaran Boat?

Permanent repairs to the deck canvas of small sports catamaran, like a Hobie Cat, or larger canvas areas, like sails, require a sewn patch. Temporary repairs, like those made with sail tape or adhesives will usually fail under wind loads or the weight of passengers. A sail loft can make permanent repairs, but with a bit of thought and some preparation, so can you. Remove the damaged canvas from the boat. Measure the size of the damaged area. Measure and cut a piece of marine canvas of the same type and color as the existing canvas; it should be 1/2 inch larger than the damaged area on all sides. Use the heavy duty sewing machine and sailmaker’s polyester thread to sew the canvas patch over the damaged area. Sew around the perimeter of the patch with a zigzag stitch. The patch should be slightly larger than the tear, overlapping the edge of the tear by about 1/2 inch. Use the scissors to cut the damaged canvas away from the side of the sail opposite the side to which the patch was sewn.
