Loose and broken tiles can destroy the look of any tile job. They can also result in damage to the entire tile wall if in an area of high moisture like a shower. The process to repair a loose or broken tile is exactly the same whether it is just loose or is broken. The main point to remember is safety. Broken tiles are extremely sharp and can create cuts that require multiple stitches. Remove the loose or broken tile with the hammer and chisel. Be careful no to cut yourself with a broken tile. Remove the thin set mortar with the hammer and chisel. In most cases you will not need the hammer to remove the thin set tile. Wipe the area clean with a sponge and water. Allow to dry completely. Apply tile adhesive to the back of the tile with the putty knife. Use the putty knife to make grooves in the adhesive; the grooves will add holding strength. Place the tile in location.
