The following is a do-it-yourself guide to repairing the bricks and mortar on the exterior of your home. Put on your safety glasses, dust mask and waterproof gloves to protect yourself before beginning this project. Remove the old mortar using a hammer and chisel. The chisel will have to be one that can be worked through the gaps to get the mortar out. If the mortar is too hard to be chiseled out by hand, then you will have to use an angle grinder with a 4-½ inch blade. Remove mortar until there is a space large enough to refill. If the mortar is dry and cracked but difficult to break, make a cut in the middle of the mortar and take out the part of the mortar that is touching
