How Do You Repair A Whirlpool Washing Machine Agitator?
After twelve years of faithful service, I recently heard strange grinding noises emanating from my Whirlpool washing machine during the agitation cycle. Further investigation revealed the upper part of the agitator (the auger) was only rotating intermittently and was the source of the noise. After a brief web search, I found that a common culprit was the failure of the auger’s cam assembly. Specifically, the four Teflon dogs that provide the one-way ratcheting action of the auger were worn out. An on-line parts distributor provided a low-cost repair kit that cost me less than $20 including shipping and handling. This is an easy repair for the average do-it-yourselfer. Before you do anything else, unplug the washer’s electrical cord. Next open the lid of the washing machine. Remove the fabric softener dispenser from the top of the agitator. It just snaps on but may require a little brute force to break it loose. If it still won’t budge, you can insert the end of a flat-bladed screwdrive
