Although these blinds are sturdy, they can malfunction just like anything else; the track can break or slats can break. It can often be cost effective to repair vertical blinds yourself rather than replacing the entire unit. Slat Malfunction Step 1 Replace the stem that holds the louver or vertical slat in place and the worm gear, which works between the tilt rod and the stem, if the blinds are not working correctly. Step 2 Pull on the metal beaded chain to move the slats into the open position. Step 3 Remove the stem with a pair of needle-nose pliers by using a twisting motion against the carrier body and the bottom of the stem. The stem should come out after doing this.
