The snaps on your canvas awning may attach the awning itself to the framework, or the snaps may attach awning accessories such as screen panels and shades. Over time, a snap may fail to function and need repair. Replacing the old snap is the easiest repair, as once a snap has been dented or disfigured it can no longer be used. Although snaps attached to canvas seem permanent, they are removable with the right tools. Remove the canvas awning from the framework. Lay the awning on a sturdy surface. Place a block of wood underneath the snap to protect the work surface. Grip the sides of the snap with the pliers. Place the drill bit on the small raised section in the center of the snap. If you do not see the raised section, turn the snap over and work from that side. All snaps have a raised center section on one side of the snap.
