Recently I went to take a shower, and much to my disappointment, there was no hot water. I discovered that the pilot light on my two year old Kenmore Powermiser gas water heater had went out. I re-lit it, and the water heater worked fine for a while. After two days I discovered that the pilot light was out again. Over the course of the next two weeks the situation worsened until the pilot light would go out several times a day. Unfortunately the warranty for the water heater had expired a couple months prior to this problem. I did some research on the Internet and discovered that this was a common problem with the Powermiser water heaters. Even the Sears technicians did not seem to know what was causing this problem. Typically they would replace the thermocouple that kept the pilot lit. When this didn’t solve the problem, the next step would be to replace the burner assembly.
