For every appliance that operates using natural gas, there is a gas valve that allows you to shut off gas to that appliance if required. The best way to fix gas leaking out of a gas valve is to replace the valve. Before you start the job, check your local regulations. Some areas require that a licensed professional gas contractor repair leaky gas valves because of the safety concerns surrounding natural gas. Turn off the gas shut-off valve near the appliance where you’re working. Turn the handle to the right to shut it off. Locate the next valve up the line from the leaky gas valve you want to replace. Turn it off as well to shut off supply to the bad valve. Use a crescent wrench to remove the leaky gas valve. Closely monitor the pipe attached to the valve to make sure it doesn’t twist at all, because that can cause leaks when you reinstall the new gas valve. Apply pipe joint compound to the pipe threads.
