Step 1 Disconnect the spark plug wire, and move it out of the way. Remove the spark plug with a ratcheting wrench and a spark plug socket or a spark plug tool. Inspect the business end of the spark plug looking for signs of wear and tear or obvious signs of damage. If the spark plug shows signs of wear, replace it immediately.
