Smooth, unblemished sidewalks look great leading up to our front door, but they can pose some hazards if there are any cracks in the concrete. If you have a crack in your sidewalk, repair it as soon as you can. Sidewalk cracks are dangerous. Step 1 Use a hammer and cold chisel to widen the crack closest to the ground to form an inverted “V.” Hold the chisel at an angle to undercut the crack and make it wider at the base than at the surface. Step 2 Sweep any debris, such as dirt, loose concrete and dust, from the crack with a broom or blow out with an air compressor. Step 3 Dampen the crack lightly with a garden hose. Apply a concrete bonding agent to the sides of the crack. Step 4 Mix the patching mortar according to manufacturer instructions. Mix 1 part concrete with 3 parts sand, and then add water until you form a stiff paste. Step 5 Pack concrete mix into the crack with a putty knife. Smooth it over with a trowel. After 2 hours, dampen the patch lightly with a garden hose and cover
