If a ceiling fan switch quits working, then it has to be replaced. The most difficult function in switch replacement is to connect the wires from the fan motor to the new switch in the same way they were attached to the old switch. It is also important to install a new switch that is identical to the old switch. The other steps in the process are fairly simple. Turn off the electric power at the breaker box and remove the bottom cap of the switch housing from the ceiling fan. If the fan contains a light kit, the lights will have to be removed to allow access to the fan switch housing. Make a wiring diagram showing where each wire is connected to the switch.
