If your car exhaust acts up, and you can’t get to a mechanic, you can apply a temporary fix with a tin can. All you need is the can and a few common tools for a temporary repair that should hold until you can get your vehicle to a pro. Step 1 Measure the diameter of the exhaust pipe with a tape measure. Step 2 Find a tin can with a diameter equal or close to the diameter of the pipe. A soda can works best, as it is easier to cut and mold. If choosing between a can that is too small and one that is too large, always go for bigger can. It will be easier to structure it to the pipe. Step 3 Using metal shears, cut the end from the soda can to create a tube. Be careful when cutting since both the blade and the freshly severed metal are sharp.
