The BlackBerry Pearl was Research In Motion’s first BlackBerry communication device to include a camera and media player. The Pearl was first released in 2006, and unlike the traditional BlackBerry device, it has a modified keyboard that permits the phone to be smaller than other BlackBerrys. The Pearl was the first BlackBerry to use a trackball instead of a scroll wheel to permit horizontal and vertical scrolling. A common problem with the BlackBerry Pearl Trackball is that it can become inoperative due to build-up of dirt in and requires cleaning. Remove the battery cover and battery on the BlackBerry Pearl by depressing the quick release button on the rear of the phone. Remove the bottom plastic cover located underneath of where the battery was located by slowly prying the cover from the edge with the computer prying tool.
