The overflow drain in the bathtub is an essential portion of your plumbing system. This portion of the drain is normally trouble-free and, for the most part, is out of sight and out of mind. When a problem does develop, such as a broken pipe, any overflow from the tub can spill into the interior portions of the wall, causing major damage and a threat to your health. Repairs should be made as soon as possible to help prevent a larger problem from developing. Step 1 Gain access to the drain from the opposite side of the wall. Select a reference point on the wall that you can identify from either side. Take careful measurements to determine the depth of the drain from the reference point as well as its height from the floor. Transfer these measurements to the opposite side of the wall. Mark a line 5 inches above your mark. From this line, measure 6 inches to each side of your mark and draw another line from the first line to the floor.
