The sulfur smell in water is due to hydrogen sulfide which has the smell of rotten eggs. This is usually caused by coal deposits in the ground, but it can also be the result of bacteria that produce hydrogen sulfide as a waste product. Hydrogen sulfide in water is not normally dangerous since the odor is usually detectable long before the hydrogen sulfide content rises to toxic levels. Step 1 Disconnect the power to the well pump and use a wrench of the appropriate size to remove the well cap. Pull the electrical wiring carefully away from the well casing without disconnecting any of the wires. Step 2 Obtain two gallons of household bleach that contains 5.25 percent sodium hypochlorite.
