Iron is a naturally occurring mineral found in soil, lakes, streams and underground water. When large amounts of iron are present in water, such as in a private well, it can give off an unpleasant odor. This odor can be removed if dealt with properly. Install an inline carbon filter to the cold water line, just before the faucet. A carbon filter removes odors from water by absorbing them into the filter, so the carbon filter will need to be replaced every month or two. Install a whole-house water purification system to help filter the smell of iron in the entire house. The two main units used for this purpose are a water softener or a reverse osmosis system. Check all water pipes and mains for rust and replace rusted sections with PVC, copper or steel piping. Rusted pipes are a main cause of iron in water.
