Many leaks from the kitchen sink are due to a faulty sink drain basket. The sink drain basket is sealed to the sink with plumber’s putty. The plumber’s putty will develop cracks over a period of time causing leaks between the sink and the basket. Once you know how to remove the drain basket in a kitchen sink, you will be able to stop the leak by applying a new seal of plumber’s putty. Step 1 Open the cabinet doors under the sink and place a bucket under the sink drain. The bucket will help in the event there is any residual water in the drain. Step 2 Use a pair of channel lock pliers to loosen the slip nut that secures the sink trap to the sink drain pipe that connects to the wall. Only loosen this slip nut, so that you can turn the sink trap out of the way. Step 3 Disconnect the slip nut connecting the drain pipe to the sink drain basket.
