Repairing speakers can be a tedious task. Without a steady hand, it is easy to permanently damage a speaker. When replacing the speaker cone or working on its voice coil, it is necessary to remove the speaker’s dust cap. You can either destroy the dust cap while removing it and then replace it with a new dust cap, or you can gently remove it and reattach it after you are finished working on your speaker. Either way, you must use caution to avoid damaging the voice coil, speaker cone or any other part of the speaker. Destroy the Dust Cap Step 1 Cut an “X” in the center of the dust cap. Use your finger to locate the middle of the dust cap. You should be able to push in a little bit without resistance. Use a utility knife and start your “X” shape at the center.
