How Do You Remove Paint From An Old Doorknob?
Many old doorknobs add character to a home, but often they haven’t been well cared for and are covered with paint and grime. Although you can use a commercial paint remover to try and get paint off old doorknobs, this can often cause more damage to the hardware because of the oxidization that occurs as metal ages. A less harsh and more economical method is described here and is appropriate for all types of old doorknobs, including brass and porcelain. Step 1 Remove the doorknobs, faceplates, and any other associated hardware from the door. Step 2 Place all hardware in the Crockpot and cover them with water. Step 3 Add 2 to 3 tbs. of dishwashing or laundry detergent. Step 4 Set the heat on medium and leave for about 8 hours or overnight. Step 5 Carefully remove the hardware from the pot (it will be quite hot, so use tongs or a slotted spoon), and set it on a cloth or protected surface to cool.
