How Do You Remove Old Putty From Windows?
Many old window sashes use a combination of glazing points and putty to secure the window glass to the frame. When a window gets broken, you will have to remove the putty to replace the window. Glazing putty can become very hard after being exposed to the elements. Because of this, it can be difficult to remove. Most professionals use heat to attempt to soften the putty to remove the putty from the window. Step 1 Remove the window sash from the window if possible. Put on a pair of leather work gloves and remove as much of the broken window as possible if the glass is broken. Step 2 Place your heat gun or hair dryer on the high setting and begin to heat the putty. Fan the heat gun back and forth over a 6-inch area. The heat will begin to soften the putty in most cases.
