Odor is a common problem with cast iron skillets since they rust easily and can build up residue at high temperatures. Any lingering odors can be removed with a thorough cleaning, and it can be prevented by regularly seasoning the skillet with oil. Fill the cast iron skillet with a solution made of baking soda, sea salt, water and vinegar. After the liquid has sat in the skillet for two hours, scrub the surface of the pan with steel wool to remove remaining debris. Keep the solution in the pan to make cleaning easier.
