However, if you don’t want to pay a plumber, you can dismantle a toilet yourself. Step 1 Shut off the water supply. Behind most toilets there is a water supply valve. Turn the handle on the valve counterclockwise until it is tightened. Step 2 Flush the toilet to empty the tank, and use an old towel or a sponge to soak up water left in the tank. Step 3 Remove the water supply hose from the bottom of the tank. You’ll want to have a bucket and towels handy for water left in the tank and hose.
