The bathroom hamper provides just the right environment for mold and mildew to thrive. During the winter months, dry air inside the home may work in your favor and prevent the growth of these smelly fungi, but as the weather warms they will flourish. Removing the odor caused by the growth of mold and mildew can be a challenge, but with proper care and some preventive measures you can keep your towels smelling fresh all summer. Fill the washer with hot soapy water. Add 1 cup of bleach and allow to agitate to mix thoroughly. Place the towels in the washer and let them soak for 20 minutes. Launder as usual. Light-colored or white towels will come out bright and odorless. Soak colored towels in hot water with 2 cups white vinegar. Allow to rest for 20 minutes and run through the wash cycle.
