Empty plastic water bottles can be recycled and used to create decorative and functional items that range from children’s crafts, such as sand art paperweights and homemade instruments, to home and gardening items, like weighted door stops or candle holders. Before you reuse the bottles, however, improve the look of the containers by removing the label from the outside. If the paper won’t peel off cleanly or leaves a sticky film behind, use some household items and simple techniques to remove the unsightly residue. Loosen leftover label bits from the recycled plastic bottle by applying heat from a hair blow dryer along the surface of the bottle for 30 seconds. Hold the blow dryer 6 inches away from the bottle and keep the flow of hot air moving so you don’t warp the plastic. Turn off the blow dryer and set the bottle aside to cool.
