Olefin carpet, also known as polypropylene, is the second most common carpet material; only nylon is used more often. Therefore, chances are high that the carpet in your home may be made of olefin, especially if it is a woven or Berber style carpet. Olefin has many advantages: it is inexpensive, is solution-dyed (which means the yarn is the same color all the way through) and is stain resistant. Olefin cleans well even when faced with tough marks from grease and oil. Apply a fair amount of rubbing alcohol to a towel. Starting with the outside perimeter of the stain, work dab or blot the area. Gentle agitation is fine, but avoid aggressive rubbing as this can distort the carpet yarns, especially on olefin. Repeat until the grease spot is no longer visible. Take your time, and avoid rushing the process by pouring the alcohol directly onto the carpet. Less is more in this situation.
