How Do You Remove Felt Floor Underlayment?
When you are remodeling a room, you may come across felt underlayment under vinyl flooring, tile or carpet. Felt underlayment is actually a mixture of felt and wool. This type of traditional underlayment is considered “green” because most of the materials used in the underlayment are made of recycled material. Removing felt underlayment is necessary if it is damaged or worn, so you can lay your new flooring properly. Remove all staples, screws and/or nails that are holding the underlayment down. If staples are holding it down, needle-nose pliers are a good option to remove them. Screws should be removed with a screwdriver, and nails can be removed using a hammer or needle-nose pliers. Place these in a container for disposal. Cut strips in the underlayment approximately 1 foot wide with a utility knife. This makes it easy to roll the underlayment up and dispose of it.
