Grout is a bonding agent used between tiles to hold them together during installation. Most grout contains Portland cement, which takes several days to fully set. While it is recommended that grout be carefully applied so it does not get onto the tile, it inevitably will happen. Grout that is not cleaned off immediately will dry harder as time passes. Carefully scrubbing the tile as soon as possible with non-metal tools is an effective method of removing excess grout and saving the tile. Purchase wood grout sticks or use pieces of oak wood that are approximately 1/4 inch thick by 1 inch wide by 6 inches long. Oak is preferred as it will hold an edge longer than softwoods. Make sure the edge is square-cut and not rounded. Pour a small amount of water onto the excess grout and scrape the grout with the wood stick to remove large clumps.
