How Do You Remove Coating On Copper Cookware?
Lacquer coating on copper items helps to protect it from tarnish and gives it that glossy look. If your copper is purely for display purposes only, it isn’t a big deal and may actually be helpful. If you intend to use your copper cookware for cooking, this coating must be removed before use as it can burn and leave black marks that are nearly impossible to get rid of. Removing this coating is a simple yet necessary chore. Add 1 tbsp. of baking soda per quart of water into a large pot. Fill the pot with enough water to submerge a piece of cookware. Bring the water to a boil, and gently set a piece of the cookware into it. Allow the item to boil for at least 15 minutes. Use a pair of tongs to help pull the cookware item out of the boiling water. Wash the cookware with warm soapy water and a nylon scrubber to help peel off the now softened layer of lacquer coating. Rinse the item thoroughly to remove any loose pieces of coating, and dry the cookware with a clean, dry towel.
