Removing asphalt floor tiles can be a time-consuming, arduous task. It also can be dangerous if the tiles contain asbestos, which was used in flooring from the 1920s through the mid-1960s. If your tiles are from that era, have them checked for asbestos by a code enforcement official or buy a respirator to wear while you work. Scrapers with long handles and sharp blades make the job of peeling up the tiles easier. You can find scrapers in the flooring section of your local home improvement store. Fit a blade into the scraper. Put on gloves, goggles and a safety mask or respirator. Stand with the handle of the scraper at your midsection, with the blade resting against the edge of a tile about 2 feet in front of you. Work the blade under the tile and push forward while you slide the blade. Try to remove the tiles in one piece for easier cleanup and to avoid releasing asbestos into the air.
