How Do You Remove A Stripped Screw With A Screw Extractor?
Removing a stripped screw can be a frustrating experience. Many times, increased effort results in more damage to the screw head. Using a slightly larger screwdriver bit can sometimes work but if it doesn’t then it may be time to try the specialty tool designed for this particular purpose. Use a screw extractor to safely and quickly remove stripped screws. Using a bit designed for drilling metal, drill a small pilot hole in the center of the screw head. Make the hole just large enough for the tip of the screw extractor to get a grip on the head of the screw. Insert the screw extractor into the pilot hole and make sure it grips the screw. It may be necessarry to enlarge the pilot hole if the extractor doesn’t get a good bite. Using either vice grips or a t-handle tap wrench, turn the screw extractor counter-clockwise. It will bite into the metal allowing you to remove the stripped screw.
