There may come a time where you need to remove the fuel tank from your vehicle to either clean or replace it. The fuel tank, which is where the filler tube is, should never be removed if the fuel system is pressurized. Also the fuel is very heavy, so it is best to remove the tank when it is almost empty. Open the gas cap to the fuel tank. Remove the fuel pump relay from the engine’s fuse box, then turn the engine on and wait for it to stall, signaling that the pressure is relieved. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Siphon out all remaining gas into an approved gas can. Use a siphoning kit from an auto parts store to remove the gas. Remove the flange on the body for the fuel filler tube by removing the screws–it usually requires a hex wrench. This is only necessary on a few models, usually pickup trucks, where the filler neck is permanently attached to the tank.
