Processors are the power behind a computer. Thankfully, they are also relatively easy to access and upgrade, if necessary. But because your computer will not work without its processor, do not attempt to remove it unless you have had experience with computer hardware. Before you begin, you should know how to access your motherboard and avoid transferring static electricity to your computer’s components, and have a basic understanding of its internal layout. Turn off your computer and disconnect its power source. Touch the side of the case or another metal object to discharge static electricity. Open your computer case and locate the processor heat sink. In a desktop, the heat sink will be on the motherboard, normally on the far wall of the case. You may have to remove several pieces of hardware to find the processor area in a laptop.
