How Do You Register For A US DOT Number?
Under federal and state laws, anyone who operates a truck, bus or other oversized vehicle for commercial purposes must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and obtain a USDOT number, unless they’re exempt from doing so. This includes commercial operators and companies who (a) transport passengers and agricultural products; (b) haul freight; and (c) handle hazardous materials, either across state lines or within a state. A USDOT number is a unique identifier that allows authorities to monitor the performance and driving history of commercial operators and carriers to ensure that they follow all traffic laws and employ safe driving measures. USDOT numbers are assigned by the FMCSA at no charge. Find out the prerequisites for getting a USDOT number issued and which forms you have to fill out. Do this by either going to the FMCSA website, by calling the FMCSA information line at 800-832-5660, or by contacting one of the FMCSA field offices for instructions
