An external hard drive gives any computer user extra storage space for data, pictures and programs. They are also extremely useful for backing up data, or for creating a bootable system backup disk that can be used if the main hard drive becomes corrupted or crashes and cannot be used. Reformatting an external hard drive is an easy task to perform from within your existing operating system. Attach the external hard drive to your computer with the supplied cables. Most modern external hard drives are attached via one of the USB ports on your computer. Older drives may be attached via either the serial port or the parallel (or printer) port.
