Thinking about refinishing your wood floors yourself? Recently, in one of our rental houses, we discovered 1920’s fir floors beneath the stained pink carpet. There were a couple spots where animals had left their marks but overall the floors were gorgeous, though heavily varnished. We decided to restore the wood floors and called around for bids, which came in at around $4.00 per square foot. The house is small, but at that rate, the expense would have been over $2500.00. So, we decided to do it ourselves. We did it in two weekends. It was hard, but rewarding work. The floors are honey-colored and gleaming and we spent less than $700, and could have spent even less had we known what we know now.
