Ceramic tile color can be changed using primer and paint. Meticulous cleaning and preparation of the tile and the application of the right type of primer and paint can change an ugly tile surface into an acceptable updated look. Grout can be painted at the same time as the tile to create a single-colored surface. Tile that is used in “wet areas,” where water soaks, pools or pounds against the tile should be replaced and not painted. This includes showers, bathtubs and sinks. Clean the surface. Dirt, debris, wax and oil can prevent paint and primer from adhering to the ceramic tile properly. Scrub the tile aggressively for best results.
