How Do You Reduce The Risk Of SIDS Or Crib Death?
Research on Sudden Infant Death Syndrome has been done time and again, yet there is still no definite findings on what causes it.
However, there are several ways in which to minimize the risks of SIDS.
1. Do not use excess beddings in the baby’s crib or sleeping area. Too much soft beddings, too many pillows and very thick blankets increase the risk of SIDS. Having many beddings may cause the baby to rebreathe his or her exhaled air, which does not contain enough oxygen to support the baby’s need.
2. Avoid smoking and using prohibited drugs during pregnancy. Research shows that smoking and drug using plays a role in the occurrence of SIDS. Babies who are born to mothers who smoke and use drugs have higher risk of SIDS.
3. As much as possible avoid using very soft beddings or surfaces for the baby’s crib. Studies show that there is a link between sleeping on soft surfaces and SIDS. Avoid laying a baby down on quilts, waterbeds, beanbags, comforters and sofas.
4. Overheating in the sleeping area or baby’s bedroom should be avoided. Babies can overheat, too. If the weather is warm, avoid wrapping a baby in too many blankets or putting on too thick clothing.
These are just a few of the things I did when my son was a newborn. Thankfully, he is now nearly four years old and doing really great.
