Most GERD surgery is laparoscopic and is classified as Nissen Fundoplication. This type of surgery requires one to two days in the hospital where your diet and pain will be managed by medical professionals. When you get home you can minimize your pain and get back on your feet within one to two weeks if you monitor your wounds, diet and medicine properly. Account for the time that you will be in surgery and still under general anesthesia. While the surgery itself usually takes about an hour, you may not wake up from anesthesia for several hours and usually have at least a full night to recover in the hospital as well.
