There are at least two hundred different video formats used in computers and internet. There are about two dozen formats that are very popular and that is still a lot. Here’s how to recognize common video file formats. Look at a file that has the file extension, “avi”. This stands for Audio Video Interleave and was the first Windows video format. AVI can have many versions with “codecs” (coder decoders) and the video player must have the codec needed to play back the video. Look at a file that has the file extension, “wmv”. This stands for Windows Media Video. WMV reduces the many possible codecs used in AVI down to 3: Windows Media 7, 8, and 9. It can compress the video well and provide good quality. Look at a file that has the file extension, “divx”. This stands for Digital Video Express and sometimes the file extension will have “avi” attached instead of “divx”. DivX is a hacked version of the Microsoft MPEG-4 v3 format but is now a legal video format. Look at a file that has the fi
