How Do You Recognize Marburg Hemorrhagic Fever Symptoms?
• Know who is at risk of contracting the disease: • People who have close contact with a human or primate infected with the virus. Including: • Laboratory or quarantine facility workers who handle primates that have been linked to the disease. • Hospital staff and family members who care for patients with the disease. • Travelers to Africa, where the virus is indigenous, are not at a high risk. However, there have been at least 2 cases of the disease reported among those who have traveled the area extensively. • Recognize the symptoms of the disease. • Following a 5-10 incubation period of the virus, look for a sudden onset of: • Fever. • Chills. • Headache. • Pain in the muscles. • Approximately 5 days after the beginning of symptoms, watch for: • A rash on the skin. Usually on the chest, back, and stomach. • Nausea. • Abdominal pain. • Diarrhea. • Vomiting. • Chest pain. • Sore throat. • As symptoms become increasingly critical, look for: • Jaundice. • Dementia. • Shock. • Liver fail
