• Know who is at risk of contracting monkeypox. Anyone is at risk who has come into contact with an animal or person infected with monkeypox. Those who are at a higher risk include: • Pet shop owners – particularly those who sell rodents imported from areas in Africa. • Pet shop employees – especially those responsible for the care and clean-up of imported rodents. • Animal control officers (dogcatchers). • Veterinarians. • Those who work in the shipping and receiving of imported rodents. • Animal handlers and zoo workers. • Anyone who owns certain genera of African rodents and prairie dogs. • Recognize the symptoms of monkeypox. The incubation period for monkeypox is around 12 days. • The illness starts with: • Swollen lymph nodes. • Fever. • Headache. • Muscle aches. • Feeling irritated and uncomfortable. • Extreme fatigue. • Backache. • 1-3 days following the appearance of fever: • A rash develops (usually on the face) with raised bumps. • The rash spreads to other parts of the body
