When a dog experiences histiocytosis there is an issue with the inflammatory response cells. Experts believe this condition is genetically inherited and it’s more prone to occur in breeds such as Rottweilers, Labradors and Doberman Pinschers. Examine your dog for symptoms of histiocytosis. Signs of this condition may include coughing, weight loss and a decrease in appetite. You may also notice that lymph nodes are enlarged and breathing seems to be difficult. Seek medical attention for your dog. Keep your dog calm while transporting him to the vet. If he becomes stressed or excited it may worsen his condition. Your dog’s vet will take x-rays and blood work to make a diagnosis. Partner with the vet to create a treatment plan. If your canine is dehydrated he will need to increase fluids and possibly add electrolytes. Dogs that have histiocytosis may suffer from anemia or low protein levels. This may require a blood transfusion in your canine. Provide a relaxing environment for your dog.
