• Know what to look for if you suspect someone may have Fifth disease. Signs and symptoms include: • In children: • A low-grade fever or cold symptoms (occurring 1-2 days before the rash). • A rash on the face (sometimes described as “slapped-cheek” rash) and a lacelike, red rash on the body, arms, and legs. • Itching. • Normally the child will not become very ill and the rash will disappear in a week or so. • In adults (if symptoms exist): • The rash may be present. • The joints of the hands, wrists, and knees may become painful and swollen. This may resolve in 1-2 weeks, or last several months. • Itching. • Know the treatment for Fifth disease. In the majority of cases the illness resolves on its own with no need for treatment. Keeping the affected person comfortable and rested is all that may be needed. For adults, over-the-counter medicines, such as aspirin or ibuprofen, may be taken for pain and to help reduce swelling in the joints. Be aware that persons with chronic anemia may s
