Simple cross stitch charts rely on symbols, with a key identifying the color. Elaborate cross stitch projects may require a full-color cross stitch chart and some charts may even be used alongside embellished printed canvas. Open your cross stitch chart. Familiarize yourself with the key on the chart, including the variety of symbols and/or colors used to identify the threads in your cross stitch kit. Match the cross stitch threads to the symbols or colors on the cross stitch chart.
